Summary:

Forward Promise aims to promote opportunities for boys and young men of color (BYMOC) to heal, grow, and thrive in the face of chronic stress and trauma. Empowerment Projects seek to strengthen organizations that provide culturally relevant healing responses to trauma, and can partner with the youth-serving systems that touch BYMOC to advance new practices to prevent further traumatization. In doing so, it is important that the organizations use the stories of BYMOC’s resilience and healing to promote and inform their work, and that BYMOC themselves are the ones telling those stories. Forward Promise seeks to elevate the promising practices of Empowerment Projects grantees to advance a greater understanding of what it means for BYMOC to heal, grow, and thrive. Equipped with this understanding, we hope that other youth-serving organizations and systems can then identify and modify their policies and practices that, intentionally or not, serve as barriers to the health and success of BYMOC.

Eligibility:

  • Awards will be made to organizations, not to individuals.
  • Applicant organizations must be based in the United States or its territories.
  • Preference will be given to applicants that are either public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are not private foundations or Type III supporting organizations. The Foundation may require additional documentation.
  • Programs that serve both young men and women will be considered, but must indicate an explicit emphasis on improving outcomes for BYMOC. Additionally, preference will be given for organizations whose programs are made up of at least 50 percent male participants.
  • The applicant must have the administrative and financial capacity to manage an award of the size being requested. This includes proper governance, sufficient staffing and strong policies, procedures and internal controls. For consideration for grants in the amount of $450,000, this would generally indicate an annual operating budget of $1.2 million or more at the time of proposal submission. Applicants seeking grants in the amount of $150,000 would generally be expected to have an organizational budget of at least $500,000 annually at the time of proposal submission. Organizations with a budget of over $1.0 million will be considered only in the $450,000 category.

Available Funding:

  • Up to nine awards will be made through this initiative. To ensure the initiative is accessible to a variety of organizations, awards will be made in two sizes.
  • Up to six grants of up to $450,000 per grantee will be awarded, and up to three grants of up to $150,000 per grantee will be awarded. Award size consideration will be determined by the applicant’s administrative and financial capacity as described in the following section.
  • Grant duration will be two years.
  • Grants will begin on November 1, 2017.

William T. Grant Scholars Program (Limited Competition)

Summary:

The William T. Grant Scholars Program supports career development for promising early-career researchers. The program funds five-year research and mentoring plans that significantly expand junior researchers’ expertise in new disciplines, methods, and content areas. We recognize that early-career researchers are rarely given incentives or support to take such risks, so this award includes a mentoring component, as well as an emphasis on community and collaboration.

Eligibility:

Only ONE candidate may be nominated from a major division (e.g., College of Arts and Sciences, Medical School) of the institution. Applicants must be nominated by their institutions.

  • Applicants must have received their terminal degree within seven years of submitting their application. This is calculated by adding seven years to the date the doctoral degree was conferred. In medicine, the seven-year maximum is dated from the completion of the first residency.
  • Applicants must hold a tenure-track position.
  • Applicants outside the United States are eligible. As with U.S. applicants, they must pursue research that has compelling policy or practice implications for youth in the United States.
  • Applicants of any discipline are eligible.

Available Funding:

Award recipients are designated as William T. Grant Scholars. Each year, four to six Scholars are selected and each receives up to $350,000, distributed over five years. Awards begin July 1.  The award must not replace the institution’s current support of the applicant’s research. Awards will be announced in March 2018.

Summary:

Environment

The Foundation supports efforts to address a range of environmental issues. Among these are initiatives aimed at combating climate change by reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency; ensuring access to clean air and water by preventing pollution and the use of toxic chemicals; and restoring the health of the oceans by promoting responsible fishing, fighting ocean pollution and preserving marine ecosystems. Funded organizations employ a variety of strategies including policy advocacy, litigation and other legal efforts, public education, grassroots campaigns, and market-based and economic incentives. Historically, the Foundation’s environmental funding has been focused on organizations whose efforts are national and international in scope. However, local initiatives to increase the sustainability and resiliency of New York City’s built environment are also of interest.

Criminal Justice

Funding in this area is focused on efforts to promote fair and effective criminal justice policies, to reduce recidivism, and to improve public safety. Among these are sentencing reform initiatives including repeal of mandatory minimum sentencing laws and increased use of alternatives to incarceration.

Economic Development

The Foundation’s funding in the area of economic development is aimed at increasing the number of living wage jobs in New York City and ensuring low-income workers’ access to those jobs. Support is provided for initiatives that help individuals, families and communities to achieve and sustain economic self-sufficiency; for advocacy efforts to advance effective economic and workforce development policies; and for a range of job training programs, with an emphasis on those geared toward long-term retention and advancement in specific employment sectors.

Reproductive Rights

The Foundation supports domestic programs that seek to protect women’s reproductive rights and increase access to reproductive health services. Funded initiatives include those working to achieve these goals through public education efforts, policy advocacy and legal advocacy. Also of interest to the Foundation are efforts to increase reproductive health training opportunities for medical students and healthcare professionals, as well as efforts to support them as public advocates for comprehensive reproductive healthcare.

Civil Legal Services

The Foundation supports efforts to reduce barriers to effective and unrestricted civil legal assistance through direct legal representation and policy advocacy. Support is provided for programs offering legal representation and training on a range of issues including education, employment and foster care. Funding is also provided for initiatives aimed at increasing the accessibility of legal services in underserved communities, as well as those that enhance the courts’ ability to effectively and efficiently process cases.

PECASE: Each year NSF selects nominees for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from among the most meritorious recent CAREER awardees. Selection for this award is based on two important criteria: 1) innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology that is relevant to the mission of NSF, and 2) community service demonstrated through scientific leadership, education, or community outreach. These awards foster innovative developments in science and technology, increase awareness of careers in science and engineering, give recognition to the scientific missions of the participating agencies, enhance connections between fundamental research and national goals, and highlight the importance of science and technology for the Nation’s future. Individuals cannot apply for PECASE. These awards are initiated by the participating federal agencies. At NSF, up to twenty nominees for this award are selected each year from among the PECASE-eligible CAREER awardees most likely to become the leaders of academic research and education in the twenty-first century. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy makes the final selection and announcement of the awardees.

Educational Opportunity Centers Program – 84.066A

Summary:

The Educational Opportunity Centers program provides counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of postsecondary education. The program also provides services to improve the financial and economic literacy of participants. An important objective of the program is to counsel participants on financial aid options, including basic financial planning skills, and to assist in the application process. The goal of the EOC program is to increase the number of adult participants who enroll in postsecondary education institutions.

Projects include: academic advice, personal counseling, and career workshops; information on postsecondary education opportunities and student financial assistance; help in completing applications for college admissions, testing, and financial aid; coordination with nearby postsecondary institutions; media activities designed to involve and acquaint the community with higher education opportunities; tutoring; mentoring; education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students; and programs and activities previously mentioned that are specially designed for students who are limited English proficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youths, students who are in foster care or are aging out of foster care system or other disconnected students.

Eligibility:

Who May Apply: Institutions of Higher Education, public and private agencies and organizations including community-based organizations with experience in serving disadvantaged youth, combinations of such institutions, agencies and organizations, and as appropriate to the purposes of the program; secondary schools.

Participants must reside in the target area served by an Educational Opportunity Center. The students must be at least 19 years old and two-thirds of them must be potential first-generation college students and low-income persons. If the services of a Talent Search program are not available in the target area, persons under 19 may be served.

For an applicant that is not currently receiving an EOC Program grant, the maximum award amount is $236,000.
