Summary:

 This solicitation seeks proposals to make use of Blue Waters for breakthrough research in any domain supported by the National Science Foundation or any other federal agency. Blue Waters constitutes the largest NSF-funded system and staff dedicated to supporting a small number of projects at the frontiers of computational science.

In 2013, a new NSF-funded petascale computing system, Blue Waters, was deployed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The goal of this project and system is to open up new possibilities in science and engineering by providing computational capability that makes it possible for investigators to tackle much larger and more complex research challenges across a wide spectrum of domains. The purpose of this solicitation is to invite research groups to submit requests for allocations of resources on the Blue Waters system. Proposers must show compelling science or engineering challenges that require petascale computing resources. Proposers must also be prepared to demonstrate that they have science or engineering research problems that require and can effectively exploit the petascale computing capabilities offered by Blue Waters. Proposals from or including junior researchers are encouraged, as one of the goals of this solicitation is to build a community capable of using petascale computing.

NYU Whitehead Fellowships for Junior Faculty

Summary:

The New York University Whitehead Fellowships assist faculty in the early years of their independent research careers to conduct focused research projects in the biomedical and biological sciences and enhance their ability to compete successfully for external funds.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to applicants from all New York University units with faculty working in the biomedical sciences. At the time of application, applicants must be full-time, tenure track, nontenured faculty within five years of their first tenure track faculty appointment, including appointments at other institutions. Previous recipients of Whitehead Fellowships are ineligible to compete.

Available Funding:

Two grants will be awarded in 2017. Awards will be in an amount up to $30,000 for a one-year project period beginning September 1, 2017.

Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Career Development Award (CDA)

 Summary:

The purpose of the Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Foundation is to support the research of promising young scientists, to contribute to the creation of new areas of research in the biological sciences in Italy, and to strengthen and develop collaborative relationships between Italian scientists and those at Harvard Medical School in Boston (HMS).

The Career Development Award consists of three-to-five years of funding allocated to an independent investigator at a host institute in Italy. The program is aimed at young and talented scientists, to enable them to contribute significantly to their areas of research. Funding will become available July 1, 2018.

Eligibility:

  • be young, emerging basic scientists with demonstrated productivity and the ability to function as an independent investigator. Previous experience working with or at HMS is desirable but not an essential requirement.
  • have a minimum of three years of postdoctoral research experience in basic biological sciences (including at least two years abroad) and be no more than 10 years from having received a PhD.  The calculation of the three and 10 years is made by comparing the date the degree was conferred to the CDA application deadline (i.e. July 15, 2017), so this year the degree should have been received no earlier than July 15, 2007, and not later than July 15, 2014. Please note that the actual elapsed time since the award of the first PhD considered for eligibility can be reduced in the following properly documented circumstances. For maternity, the actual elapsed time since the award of the first PhD will be considered reduced by 18 months for each child born during PhD study or after the PhD award. For paternity, the actual elapsed time since the award of the first PhD will be considered reduced by the documented amount of paternity leave actually taken for each child born during PhD study or after the PhD award. For long-term illness, clinical training or national service the actual elapsed time since the award of the first PhD will be considered reduced by the documented amount of leave actually taken by the applicant for each incident which occurred after the PhD award.
  • be researchers outside of Italy who wish to become part of the community of researchers in Italy.  Applicants must be working outside of Italy, not only at the time of application, but also when the award is made and accepted.
  • have an agreement for development of a novel research area in a suitable host institution in Italy.   Preferably, this is at an institution other than where the candidate has done doctoral study, post-doctoral research or held a job.
  • not have a pre-existing contract, independent of this grant, with a prospective host institute in Italy.  Applications from candidates who have already been offered an appointment at an Italian host institute will not be considered.
  • As part of the preliminary discussion with a host institute, an offer of a tenure-track position is desirable.
  • A candidate who is nominated for a Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Foundation Career Development Award may not hold this award concurrently with another grant designed to assist in establishing the scientist at a host institute in Italy and to pursue the same line of research. Exceptions to this will be made only under exceptional circumstances, which must be communicated promptly to the Armenise-Harvard Foundation for consideration.  Co-funding from the host institution, on the other hand, would be positively considered.

Available Funding:

$ 200,000 per year.

The funds may cover the costs related to compensation of the researcher (commensurate with the position occupied at the host institution), salaries of the other members involved in the indicated research project, and equipment/infrastructure.

Summary:

DSO invites proposers to submit innovative basic or applied research concepts in one or more of the following technical areas: Mathematics, Modeling and Design; Physical Systems; Human-Machine Systems; and Social Systems. Each of these areas is described below and the RFP includes a list of example research topics that highlight several (but not all) potential areas of interest. Proposals must investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances. DSO is explicitly not interested in approaches or technologies that primarily result in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

Mathematics, Modeling, and Design: Development and implementation of advanced mathematics and modeling tools for applications of interest to U.S. national security.

Physical Systems: Leading-edge experimental and/or theoretical research that advances our understanding and capabilities for U.S. national security in the physical sciences.

Human-Machine Systems: Research to analyze, understand, and optimize humanmachine/human-technology systems and system dynamics across a variety of application areas important for U.S. national security (e.g., materials, part and platform manufacturing, defense systems, human innovation systems, and collaborative military systems).

Social Systems: New methods, tools, and approaches to explore and better understand human social systems and dynamics in a national security context.

Eligibility:

All responsible sources capable of satisfying the Government’s needs may submit a proposal that shall be considered by DARPA.

Without prior approval or a waiver from the DARPA Director, in accordance with FAR 9.503, a contractor cannot simultaneously provide scientific, engineering, technical assistance (SETA) or similar support and also be a technical performer.

The Eppley Foundation for Research

Summary:

The Eppley Foundation for Research was incorporated in 1947 for the purpose of “increasing knowledge in pure or applied science…in chemistry, physics and biology through study, research and publication.”

The Foundation funds projects in biological and physical sciences. Particular areas of interest include innovative medical investigations, endangered species and ecosystems in the U.S. and abroad, and climate change.

The Foundation does not support work in the social sciences, education or computer science, and only rarely funds research into diseases that have considerable financial support available, such as AIDS, diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

The Foundation does not fund work that can qualify for funding from conventional sources such as the National Science Foundation or the National Institutes of Health, or similar agencies at the state level.

It is important to the Foundation that the work proposed be novel in its insights and unlikely to be underway elsewhere. The Foundation is prepared to take risks.

Eligibility:

The Eppley Foundation supports advanced, novel, scientific research by PhDs or MDs with an established record of publication in their specialties. Candidates with newly awarded doctorates occasionally, but rarely, meet the Foundation’s requirements for advanced research. Any applicant to the Foundation must be associated with a nonprofit organization with headquarters or a branch office in the US to process the funds. Checks are not issued directly to individuals.

Grants may be awarded for research in foreign countries but only when such applicants are US-based or associated with a US institution that will administer the grant on their behalf. The Foundation rarely considers proposals from foreign nationals studying in the US solely because they are therefore unable to qualify for federal funds.

Critical Techniques, Technologies and Methodologies for Advancing Foundations and Applications of Big Data Sciences and Engineering (BIGDATA) – NSF 17-534

Summary:

The BIGDATA program seeks novel approaches in computer science, statistics, computational science, and mathematics, along with innovative applications in domain science, including social and behavioral sciences, education, biology, the physical sciences, and engineering that lead towards the further development of the interdisciplinary field of data science.

The solicitation invites two categories of proposals:

  • Foundations (F): those developing or studying fundamental theories, techniques, methodologies, and technologies of broad applicability to big data problems, motivated by specific data challenges and requirements; and
  • Innovative Applications (IA): those engaged in translational activities that employ new big data techniques, methodologies, and technologies to address and solve problems in specific application domains. Projects in this category must be collaborative, involving researchers from domain disciplines and one or more methodological disciplines, e.g., computer science, statistics, mathematics, simulation and modeling, etc.

Proposals in both categories must include a clear description of the big data aspect(s) that have motivated the proposed approach(es), for example: the scalability of methods with increasing data volumes, rates, heterogeneity; or data quality and data bias; etc. Innovative Applications proposals must provide clear examples of the impacts of the big data techniques, technologies and/or methodologies on (a) specific domain application(s).

Proposals in all areas of sciences and engineering covered by participating NSF directorates and partnering agencies [the Office of Financial Research (OFR)], are welcome.

Before preparing a proposal in response to this BIGDATA solicitation, applicants are strongly urged to review other related programs and solicitations and contact the respective NSF program officers listed in them should those solicitations be more appropriate. In particular:

Up to $9,000,000 will be invested by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, and Microsoft (up to $3,000,000 each) in the form of cloud credits/resources.

Projects will typically receive NSF funding in the range of $200,000 to a maximum of $500,000 per year, for 3 to 4 years of support. The minimum award size will be $600,000 of total NSF/OFR funding, reflecting the minimum expected level of effort for BIGDATA projects, which are expected to be multidisciplinary in nature and include significant student involvement. Any allocation of cloud credits/resources from AWS, Google or Microsoft will be in addition to the NSF/OFR funding.

PECASE: Each year NSF selects nominees for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from among the most meritorious recent CAREER awardees. Selection for this award is based on two important criteria: 1) innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology that is relevant to the mission of NSF, and 2) community service demonstrated through scientific leadership, education, or community outreach. These awards foster innovative developments in science and technology, increase awareness of careers in science and engineering, give recognition to the scientific missions of the participating agencies, enhance connections between fundamental research and national goals, and highlight the importance of science and technology for the Nation’s future. Individuals cannot apply for PECASE. These awards are initiated by the participating federal agencies. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy makes the final selection and announcement of the awardees.

Postdoctoral Enrichment Program (PDEP) – Burroughs Wellcome Fund

Summary:

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has created the Postdoctoral Enrichment Program (PDEP) to support early career scientists who are under-represented minorities (i.e. American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander).
PDEP awards a total of $60,000 over three years to postdocs in biomedical research, who are citizens of the United States or Canada, and hosted at a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada.

Funding through PDEP expressly supports participation in the following activities:

  • Opportunities for the PDEP postdoctoral fellow to enhance their research productivity. Examples include travel and attendance to workshops, courses, and trainings in new techniques; or meetings and events that launch new collaborations and knowledge transfer.
  • Opportunities for the PDEP mentor to develop and provide mentoring resources at their home institution, to increase the research productivity and long-term career success of the postdoctoral fellow. Examples include career guidance discussions, research management trainings, or professional development in grant writing, communication, and other skills demanded of future principle investigators.
  • Opportunities for the PDEP mentor to attend an annual workshop of PDEP mentors hosted by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
  • Opportunities for the PDEP postdoc-mentor pair to participate in a national peer network of PDEP fellows to foster inter-institutional collaboration and greater community engagement.

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Enrichment Award:

  • must have no more than 36 months of postdoctoral research experience (in a research laboratory) at the time of application and not be more than 5 years from his/her Ph.D.
  • must be nominated by a qualified mentor at the degree-granting institution (an institution includes its affiliated graduate and medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions) where the applicant will conduct the postdoctoral/fellowship training. Applications must be approved by an official responsible for sponsored programs (generally from the grants office, office of research, or office of sponsored programs) at the degree-granting institution
  • must have secured a postdoctoral position with funding (including support by the mentor’s existing research grants) at a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada and must begin the postdoctoral position on or by the designated award commencement date
    n must be underrepresented minorities (i.e. American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander)
  • must be citizens of the United States or Canada (at the time of application)
  • must devote at least 75% of time to research
    Individual underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows conducting biomedical or medical research are eligible to apply. The program targets postdoctoral fellows with Ph.D.s in the biomedical or medical sciences. Applicants with M.D. degrees who have secured a postdoctoral research appointment beyond clinical fellowship will be considered for this program. DDS, DVM, and PharmD candidates may be eligible, but should contact BWF prior to applying. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.

Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP)

Summary:

The Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP) supports genome-scale research in plant genomics that addresses challenging questions of biological importance and of relevance to society. The Program encourages the development of innovative tools, technologies and resources that push the boundaries of research capabilities and permit the community to answer seemingly intractable and pressing questions on a genome-wide scale. Emphasis is placed on the creativity of the approach and the scale and depth of the question being addressed. Data produced by plant genomics should be usable, accessible, integrated across scales and of high impact across biology. Training and career advancement in plant genomics is featured as an essential element of scientific progress. The PGRP continues to focus on plants of economic importance and biological processes and interactions that will have broad impact on the scientific research community and society in general.
Four funding opportunities are currently available:
1. Genome-scale plant research and/or tool development to address fundamental biological questions in plants of economic importance on a genome-wide scale (RESEARCH-PGR);
2. Plant Transformation Challenge Grants to overcome constraints in plant transformation through breakthrough discoveries (TRANSFORM-PGR);
3. Data Mining Challenge Grants to mine, reuse and unleash new information from available large-scale datasets (MINE-PGR);
4. Career Advancement to build new careers in plant genomics as early career awards (ECA-PGR) or midcareer awards (MCA-PGR).

Eligibility:

For Early Career Investigator Awards (ECA-PGR) only: Individuals must hold an appointment as a tenure-track Assistant Professor (or equivalent) at a U.S. academic or non-profit research institution within 6 months of submission of the proposal and may submit for up to four years from the start date of the appointment.
For Mid-Career Investigator Awards (MCA-PGR) only: Individuals must hold a tenure track position (or equivalent) at a U.S. academic or non-profit research institution and have an active research program that would benefit from genomics approaches. Eligible individuals must be post-tenure and pre-retirement (or at an equivalent career stage).

Limit on Number of Proposals per PI or Co-PI:
An investigator may submit only one proposal as PI within a 12-month period, counted from the date of submission, whether a proposal is declined or awarded. Proposals submitted in excess of this limit within the 12-month period will be returned without review. There is no limit to the number of proposals submitted by an investigator as co-PI or senior personnel.
