Summary:

The Pop Culture Collaborative seeks grantee partners committed to creating a pop culture narrative environment powerful enough to re-shape the American public’s imagination around people of color, immigrants, refugees and Muslims. Our focus is on individuals, projects and collaborations that deliberately work through entertainment and mass media—movies, episodic TV and streaming series, sports, games, books, music, advertising and pop-driven journalism—to transform the narratives, values, beliefs and behaviors of millions of people everyday.

Through a pop culture lens, our grantee partners devote their artistry, resources and strategic efforts to one or more of the following: creative storytelling, narrative strategy design and implementation, research and evaluation, knowledge building and sharing, training and strategy development, audience analysis and activation, and/or network creation and management. We are looking for bold ideas, emotionally resonant storytelling, revelatory research and experiments, and critical insights that together build a powerful field at the intersection of pop culture and social change.

To be considered, proposals must engage, impact and/or support at least one or all of our multi-community focus areas –people of color, immigrants, refugees and Muslims. Intersectional focus on gender equity, the rights of children and families, LGBT rights, disability, democratic fairness, and economic justice within these four community areas is also supported.

Eligibility:

Individuals/organizations with fiscal sponsorships, non-profit and for-profits are eligible.

Available Funding:

Our funding ranges from $5,000 for small, experimental initiatives to $200,000 for multi-year culture change initiatives.

The Berlin Prize Application

Summary:

The Academy seeks to enrich transatlantic dialogue in the arts, humanities, and public policy through the development and communication of projects of the highest scholarly merit. For 2018-19, the Academy is also interested in considering projects that address the themes of migration and social integration, as well as questions of race in comparative perspective.

For all projects, the Academy asks that candidates explain the relevance of a stay in Berlin to the development of their work.

Eligibility:

Fellowships are restricted to US residents. US citizenship is not required. Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a PhD at the time of application. Candidates working in other fields—such as journalism, film, law, or public policy—must have equivalent professional degrees. Writers should have published at least one book at the time of application.

Available Funding:

Fellowship benefits include round-trip airfare, housing at the Hans Arnhold Center, partial board, and a stipend of $5,000 per month. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Academy during the entire term of the award, generally one academic semester.

Antarctic Artists and Writers Program (AAW) NSF 16-542

Summary:

The Antarctic Artists and Writers Program furnishes U.S. Antarctic Program operational support, and round-trip economy air tickets between the United States and the Southern Hemisphere, to artists and writers whose work requires them to be in the Antarctic to complete their proposed project. The Program does not provide any funding to participants, including for such items as salaries, materials, completion of the envisioned works, or any other purpose.

U.S. Antarctic Program infrastructure consists of three year-round stations and numerous austral-summer research camps in Antarctica, research ships in the Southern Ocean, and surface and air transportation. These assets support the projects undertaken by the artists and writers.

The main purpose of the U.S. Antarctic Program is scientific research and education. The Antarctic Artists and Writers Program supports writing and artistic projects specifically designed to increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of the Antarctic and human endeavors on the southernmost continent. Priority will be given to projects that focus on interpreting and representing the scientific activities being conducted in and/or about the unique Antarctic region. Resulting projects must target audiences in the U.S. and be distributed/exhibited in the U.S.

The program does not support site installations or performances in Antarctica.

The program also does not support short-term projects that are essentially journalistic in nature. See Section IX (Other NSF Programs).

Potential proposers are encouraged to contact the Program Officer prior to submitting a proposal. Note: if the Polar Program determines, prior to the panel review, that the logistic needs for a project cannot be met in the upcoming field season, the proposal will be Returned Without Review.

LIMITED COMPETITION: William T. Grant Scholars Program

Summary:

The William T. Grant Scholars Program supports career development for promising early-career researchers. The program funds five-year research and mentoring plans that significantly expand junior researchers’ expertise in new disciplines, methods, and content areas. We recognize that early-career researchers are rarely given incentives or support to take such risks, so this award includes a mentoring component, as well as an emphasis on community and collaboration.

Eligibility:

Only ONE candidate may be nominated from a major division (e.g., College of Arts and Sciences, Medical School) of the institution. Applicants must be nominated by their institutions.

  • Applicants must have received their terminal degree within seven years of submitting their application. This is calculated by adding seven years to the date the doctoral degree was conferred. In medicine, the seven-year maximum is dated from the completion of the first residency.
  • Applicants must hold a tenure-track position.
  • Applicants outside the United States are eligible. As with U.S. applicants, they must pursue research that has compelling policy or practice implications for youth in the United States.
  • Applicants of any discipline are eligible.

Available Funding:

Award recipients are designated as William T. Grant Scholars. Each year, four to six Scholars are selected and each receives up to $350,000, distributed over five years. Awards begin July 1.  The award must not replace the institution’s current support of the applicant’s research. Awards will be announced in March 2018.

The National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program

Summary:

Through the dissertation fellowship, the National Academy of Education (NAEd) and Spencer seek to encourage a new generation of scholars from a variety of fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. The NAEd and Spencer believe scholarly insight from many different disciplines can contribute to an understanding of education as a fundamental human endeavor and advance our ability to address significant current issues in education. Therefore, the NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship supports individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.

Although the dissertation topic must centrally concern education, graduate study may be in any academic discipline or professional field. Fellowships have been awarded to candidates in anthropology, architecture, art history, communications, economics, education, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, political science, psychology, public health, religion, and sociology. Eligibility is not restricted to these academic areas. Candidates should be interested in pursuing research on education once the doctorate is attained.

Eligibility:

Applicants need not be citizens of the United States; however, they must be candidates for a doctoral degree at a graduate institution within the U.S. The fellowship is not intended to finance data collection or the completion of doctoral coursework but rather to support the final analysis of the research topic and the writing of the dissertation. For this reason, all applicants must confirm via the online application that they will have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1, 2018 and must provide a clear and specific plan for completing the dissertation within a one or two-year time frame.

Available Funding:

Up to 35 non-renewable fellowships will be awarded. Recipients of the fellowships will receive $27,500 to support completion of the dissertation. This amount must be expended within a time limit of up to two years and in accordance with the work plan provided by the candidate.

Paul M. Angell Family Foundation Fall 2017 Grant Cycle

Summary:

The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation makes grants in three priority areas: Conservation, Performing Arts and Social Causes.

 Conservation
The primary focus of the Foundation’s grant making in Conservation is the protection of the world’s oceans and species. The Foundation is interested in site-specific projects designed to improve the health of ocean habitats and to enhance their ability to withstand the challenges of climate change. In addition, the Foundation supports efforts to fund species protection, particularly regarding the seas’ apex predators. Eligible projects include research, conservation and/or restoration. Grants for other types of water-related conservation efforts may be considered on a limited basis.

Performing Arts
The goal of the Performing Arts program is to support the presentation and propagation of performing arts events, focusing on classical music and theater. Grantee organizations include performers, presenters (including broadcasters) and educators. We are currently considering grants to the Chicago area, the Mid-Atlantic Region (from Washington, D.C. north to Wilmington, DE) and the Cleveland area.

Social Causes
The goal of the Foundation’s grant making in Social Causes is to support efforts to address the root causes of poverty and inequality, particularly in urban areas. Priority will be given to programs that emphasize evidence-based early intervention and prevention approaches. The Foundation seeks to support efforts designed to help alter the life trajectories of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals and families. Specific areas of interest include early childhood education, teenage pregnancy prevention, school completion for at-risk youth, workforce preparedness, and African-American male achievement. Although not limited exclusively to Chicago, grant making in Social Causes will focus on the Chicago area.

Eligibility:

Organizations can be awarded a grant(s) in only one cycle of the calendar year. The Foundation will consider multi-year grants on a case-by-case basis.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities

The Mellon Fellowship is for scholarship across boundaries

Thanks to the generous support of the Mellon Foundation, MIT’s School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences awards two fellowships each year to promising young scholars working at the intersection of humanities disciplines, or between the humanities and other disciplines. This Fellowship is especially intended for scholars who work in more than one specialty within the humanities, or bridging from the humanities with other disciplines.

The School of Humanities, Arts, and, Social Sciences has four departments participating in this search: Comparative Media Studies/Writing, Literature, Global Studies and Languages, Music and Theater Arts. Applicants must designate one of the four academic units in which they would like to be located. Appointments will be for two years, effective July 1, 2017. Fellows will teach one course in Spring 2018 and one per semester the following academic year, and will be in residence at MIT during this time.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the positions, applicants must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than July 1, 2014 and no later than July 1, 2017. If you have not earned your degree at the time you apply for the fellowship, we require an attached Letter of Certification from your institution’s Registrar’s Office, Department of Graduate Studies, or your Department Head, to confirm that you are expected to be formally awarded your degree by July 1, 2017. Please make sure that your letter writer specifies the date of your expected conferral date. Applicants who have not been formally awarded their degree by July 1, 2017 will not be considered. Fellows may not hold other appointments throughout the duration of the Fellowship. Applicants must have received their degrees from institutions other than MIT. International scholars will be considered for the position, but fellowships are contingent upon eligibility to legally work within the United States. MIT will offer a J1 visa sponsorship if needed. The Mellon Selection Committee will announce the Fellows in April 2017.

Available Funding:

The salary will be $66,000 per year with standard benefits, and each Fellow will receive a research fund of $1,000 to cover travel and other costs associated with research and professional development.

The Berlin Prize 2017-2018

Summary:

The American Academy offers residential fellowships to emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin. Around two dozen Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Past Berlin Prize recipients have included historians, economists, poets, art historians, journalists, legal scholars, anthropologists, musicologists, public policy experts, and writers, among others. The Academy does not accept project proposals in mathematics and the hard sciences.

In addition to placing a high priority on the independent work of its fellows, the Academy is in a unique position to aid fellows in establishing professional and general networks both in Berlin and beyond. The Academy’s public outreach, which facilitates the introduction of a fellow’s work to a wider audience, serves its mission of fostering transatlantic ties through cultural exchange.

Candidates should explain how their projects will benefit from a residency in Berlin, but they do not need to be working on German topics.

Fellowships are restricted to candidates based permanently in the US. US citizenship is not required, and American expatriates are not eligible.

Candidates in academic disciplines are expected to have completed a doctorate at the time of application. Applicants working in most other fields – such as journalism, law, filmmaking, or public policy – must have equivalent professional degrees.
